Rap & Blues evaluation

Double Page Spread

Double page spread Photo

I chose this shot for the other page of the double page spread because this is also refers back to the title ‘The man in the mirror’. The two small images on the sides have been placed because it shows a lethal side of the artist. I wanted to create a more fierce look of the artist.

I chose to take this picture because the article for the double page spread was referred the ‘the man in the mirror’. I chose to take these because the serious face impression is reflected into a more happy face. This is showing a more serious side and a more enjoying side of the artist.

Contents Page photo

For my contents page I chose to take this type of shot because looking through content pages I saw that most of the models were standing u so I thought to do something completely different but keep the model pose effective.

Front cover picture

I chose this model pose because this is a rare pose used by magazines such as vibe, XXL etc. This pose stood out to me because the model is sitting down and most importantly has the angle of gaze straight at the reader. Also this model is shown sitting down therefore showing that this model has a higher authority.

Final double page 4

After adding the introduction I decided to add the article. I chose to put the interview questions in black and the answers in white because these two colours are part of my colour scheme and also these two colours contrast each other.

Final double page 3

After adding the title and the pictures I added in the gradient, I chose the same colour gradient because I wanted to keep the theme consistent. Then I added the introduction into the article. I chose to use the colour blue because it goes with the original colour scheme I chose to use for my magazine.

Final double page 2

First for my double page spread I added the title. To make my title stand out I added a drop shadow and then I added bevel to make it stand out. After adding the title I added the pictures, I chose to use images on both pages to make the reader engaged.

Final double page 1

Final contents analysis 4

After adding in the little touches to the contents, I started to add the pages which my magazine will consist of. I sectioned out the different articles under to be were they belong. I chose to put the main article page reference in bigger font than the rest because this attracts the reader. I chose to add dark blue and red to the original colour scheme because it matches to what the model is wearing and also since the artist is from the UK it represents the union jack.

Final contents analysis 3

After placing the image I chose to add in the editor’s note, coming down around the back of the model because I thought this had a great effect for the contents page rather than having the note in a column. Also I added in the page reference for the artist used in the contents page, under the editors not because this area was empty and made the model look like he was floating.

Final contents analysis 2

After deciding how my content page was going to look I added in the image for my contents. I chose to put the image in the middle because I felt the contents page will be more appealing with the placement of the image there rather than on the sides.

Final contents analysis

As you can see I've chosen the same font to keep the flow of the magazine more consistent. I was thinking to keep the background white initially, however after getting feedback; I chose to add a blue gradient but lighter than the front cover gradient.

final Front cover analysis 4

This was my finished product. As you can see I’ve added more features for my magazine and I’ve stayed consistent throughout with the colour scheme. I chose to put the artist names in blue because blue stand out more than white. Also I added the price underneath the barcode reader and also the issue date of the magazine.

final Front cover analysis 3

After adding the image to my front cover I started to put features on to my front cover. I chose to put the main artist name in white and in a bigger font because the name of the artist has to stand out to the reader. Also I added the word 'exclusive' but put a box around it to make it look more important. After doing that I added a quote from the article to my front page. I then added featured articles on the other side of the front cover. Lastly I added a barcode reader to make the front cover look like a buyable product.

final Front cover analysis 2

After choosing my masthead font and colour and also choosing my gradient, I added my picture to the front cover. I chose to place this picture how it is because it stands out and intimidates the audience to make them feel they should by it.

final Front cover analysis

I chose to place my masthead at the top covering the whole top part of the page. I chose to put the 'R' and the ‘B’ in blue because my genre chosen for the magazine is RnB and Rap therefore I combined Rap and Blues together and to make RnB stand out I put those letters in blue. I’ve chosen to use a blue fading gradient because this goes well with my colour scheme of blue, black and white.

Masthead

I chose this title because my magazine genre is RnB and rap therefore I needed to think of a name which combines both genres together.

After thinking about what I can name it I realised RnB stands for 'Rhythm and Blues' so then I thought I could just replace the 'Rhythm' with rap and call my magazine Rap & Blues. After doing this I still wanted the genre of RnB to stand out, therefore for my final I chose to put the 'R' for Rap and the 'B' for blues in blue making the feel of 'RnB' stand out.

Shot list

Front Cover:

Medium long shot of model. Angle of gaze will be straight at the reader. The model will be wearing black clothing to match the colour scheme, also the black clothing will be portraying a mysterious look for the model. The special affects for the model will be, the background blurred and faded with a dark colour.

Contents Page:
Long shot of artist placed on the left of the page with the model pointing straight at the camera lens. Second shot will be placed in the centre of the page places in a box; this image will be of the main model in a different pose.

Double page spread:
The first shot will be of the main model looking straight at the camera. The special affects for this shot will and image of the artist faced to his right on the right hand side of the normal shot with his arm out and another image of the artist faced to the left hand on the left hand side of the artist with his arm out. The second image will be on the other side of the page were the artist will be looking at himself in the mirror but the mirror image will have a smile on its face.

Flat plan designs

For my Front cover, I've chosen to make the artist pose as T.I has for Vibe magazine because when I came across this pose it seemed that T.I had a lot of authority and seemed like he was the boss. The colour scheme I have chosen for the magazine is Blue, Black and White. I've chosen this because I feel the colours are more masculine and also in normal Rap and RnB magazines the main colour scheme is Red, Black and White, therefore I wanted to create something different.

For my double page spread I want to create the artist in a mirror image because my article will be based on 'the man in the mirror'. I've chosen my article to be about this because I feel that a life of a music artist had two sides, one were the artist is serious and the other when the artist is having fun.

Magazine Names

The magazine names I have chosen are:
  • Sensational
  • On Top
  • Rap & Blues
  • The whole bit

Market Research evaluation

For every magazine there should be a competition mentiond because this strategy attracts the audience to buy the magazine.

Market Research evaluation

As we have to make a double page spread for our magazine, The audience look forward to reading the article about the main artist when they buy the magazine and therefore I have came up with this question as part of my essay because an article for a magazine should be made so that the audience that buy it enjoy the aspects of the double page spread.

Market Research evaluation

As researching through magazines such as Vibe, XXL, Respect I started looking at how the models have portrayed themselves to the camera and through this I created this question as part of my survey.

Market Research evaluation

I researched into magazines that related to the genre I chose for my music magazine. The options given for this question relate to colour schemes that other well known magazines have used.

Market Research evaluation

The first question I asked for my market research for my magazine was what genre des the audience listen to. From my research I could see that the majority that I surveyed listen to RnB, Hip Hop and Rap.

Reader Profile

James Williams is a 17 year old boy who has been and bought up in the rough areas of South London. James favourite type of music is RnB and Rap music. James has been brought up in a high crime area were the use of drugs is common. Rap music inspires his lifestyle because seeing crime is daily for him and has very enthusiastic in making money, which relates to the genre of rap. James is also likes the Rnb genre because a lot of Rap artist feature Rnb artist in their music and this adds a soft sense to the music. His hobbies are boxing and football that he does most days and likes to challenge his friends to matches on the weekend. James also likes to go to the cinemas to stay in touch with the latest action and comedy movies that have been released. James likes to dress up street wise and likes to wear jewellery such as chain necklaces. James also likes to listen to artists such as Lil Wayne, Drake, Konan and Krept, Trey songz, Chris Brown and many more artists in these categories, he thinks he can relate to the music in his everyday life and says that in his area these types of genres are really popular to listen to.

Magazine Semiotics

I have chosen this magazine cover because this magazine relates to genre I have chosen for music magazine.

The visual semiotics for this magazine cover are that the model Eminem has been related to the marvel comic character the punisher. Eminem has been shown to be wearing the punishers clothing and also his angle of gaze is shown to be looking straight at he reader and also the expression on Eminem’s face relates to the marvel comic character because Eminem looks angry and looks like he is on a rampage to kill. I think Eminem has been related to the comic character the punisher because this issue of XXL was made on the long awaited return of Eminem from his absence from music for a couple of years, and on his return he made a song which conquered the US and UK charts, Therefore this portraying Eminem as the punisher to other music that is in competition to him.

The semiotics that portray the words on the front cover show that the word 'Eminem' is in the colour yellow. This showing the word Eminem to stand out. Also the colour that has been used relates to the colour of the fire used in the picture on the front cover. The use of using the colour yellow for Eminem shows that Eminem is fire and therefore showing that he can’t be stopped because he is dangerous on the mic. Also the punisher is shown to be in the colour white, this showing that it is not as important as Eminem. This is also showing that Eminem is more deadly than the punisher as he has been portrayed on the front cover.

5 Different Magazines

:

The name for Vibe magazine signals a feeling towards music and genre it has selected for the audience. Vibe suggests a feel of rap and RnB for audiences and in relation to the magazine it wants a vibe of its type of genre to spread.

The magazine XXL signals that the magazine on a whole is extra, extra large therefore showing that the magazine is really big in terms of information, pictures and latest events. The magazine tries to show that they are the biggest magazine in the genre of mainly rap and want to give a good feel to rap audiences.

The magazine Respect signals the term 'Respect' as in respect for the genre that the magazine mainly deals with. Respect mainly deals with the genre of Rap, RnB and Hip Hop and suggests this in relation to the magazine because it mainly focuses on new artists that have made it in to the main stream and show their respect for them.

The magazine Billboard signals a flashier and a big picture look for artists. This magazine focuses on RnB artist as well as various other genres, and suggests in relation to the magazine that Billboard focuses on main stream artists hence using the world 'Billboard'.

Rewind magazine is the UKs most popular rap/grime magazine. This magazine name signals that the artists that have been featured are really good therefore you have to 'Rewind' and listen all over again. This suggest relation to the magazine that rewind is related to music because the audience get given the use of rewinding music when listening to it also in relation to the magazine the term Rewind has been used because music has become so good from UK artists in the modern era that it is worth rewinding the music and listening to it again.

Target Audience for my music magazine

The target audience I have chosen for my music magazine are audiences that listen mainly to Rap and RnB songs. I have chosen this genre because this is the type of music I like to listen and I know that I will be comftable in establishing a front cover, contents page and double page spread for this genre.

The two magazines I researched are XXL and Vibe.

The colour scheme used for XXL magazine is mainly the colours red, White and black.
The colour schemes used for Vibe magazines mainly Red, White and Black, however for some artist vibe have changed the colour scheme around for example for Drake the colour scheme was Black, Yellow and White.

The price for XXL is £3.95 and the price for Vibe magazine is £3.50.

The articles in XXL mainly focus on the selected artists present and future and the magazine mainly asks the artists selected what they intend on doing in the future.
However Vive magazine mainly focuses its articles on the artist’s history and how they got to the position they are at now.

The marketing strategy that Vibe magazine uses is a subscription package where the customer can order magazine issues for 6 months on a discount deal; this is the same for Vibe magazine. Also the marketing strategies that both magazines use are that they give opportunities to audiences to win merchandise and tickets to concerts.

The online version to both magazines has more information inside it, it also gives links for social networking sites such as facebook and twitter.

Deconstructing Magazine covers

    • The models head is covering the mast head, and this theme relates to the other front covers for this magazine label.
    • The T-shirt colour of the artist matches the background colour.
    • The artists name is shown in a bigger font than the other writing on the cover this is because the magazine is mainly focusing on the model used on the front cover.
    • The colours of the teasers on the right hand side of the magazine are the same for the writing on the top of the magazine.
    • There are two buttons one is located on the top left and the other is located on the top right.
    • The target audience for this magazine are Rnb/ Hip Hop listeners.

Deconstructing Magazine covers

  • The head of the model (The game) is covering the text and this is shown in other different covers for XXL magazine showing that there is a trend.
  • The angle of gaze is straight at the audience.
  • Slang used, ‘sumfin’, this showing the stereotypical view of how listeners to this type of genre talk.

  • The artist name is written in bigger font than the other writing on the magazine cover.

  • This text colour relates to the colour of the masthead showing the relation in the colour scheme.

  • The Audience for this magazine is for listeners of rap and maybe the age group is 16-34.

Vibe Magazine Research

DS.TV: Taz and Eaze "Call It Bars" Session

Learning how to upload videos from YouTube on to blogger.

Final Preliminary Task

Front cover:

Seeing my final front cover for my preliminary task, I chose to use the colour scheme of Blue, Grey and Black, I chose these colours because they are masculine and my magazine is aimed for mainly boys in the 6th form. I chose to take a picture of a model reading a book because that refers back to how the education has got tough. The title 'Advance' shows a step up from GCSE to A levels. I've used a button on my front cover to indicate prizes to be won because people at the age of 17-18 like to get prizes.

Contents:

For my contents I chose to use the background as the brick wall because I wanted to carry out the same theme. Also the title is in the same font and colour as the front cover. I've chosen to use put my contents page references in a spiral because I think this lay out will attract the reader.
