5 Different Magazines

:

The name for Vibe magazine signals a feeling towards music and genre it has selected for the audience. Vibe suggests a feel of rap and RnB for audiences and in relation to the magazine it wants a vibe of its type of genre to spread.

The magazine XXL signals that the magazine on a whole is extra, extra large therefore showing that the magazine is really big in terms of information, pictures and latest events. The magazine tries to show that they are the biggest magazine in the genre of mainly rap and want to give a good feel to rap audiences.

The magazine Respect signals the term 'Respect' as in respect for the genre that the magazine mainly deals with. Respect mainly deals with the genre of Rap, RnB and Hip Hop and suggests this in relation to the magazine because it mainly focuses on new artists that have made it in to the main stream and show their respect for them.

The magazine Billboard signals a flashier and a big picture look for artists. This magazine focuses on RnB artist as well as various other genres, and suggests in relation to the magazine that Billboard focuses on main stream artists hence using the world 'Billboard'.

Rewind magazine is the UKs most popular rap/grime magazine. This magazine name signals that the artists that have been featured are really good therefore you have to 'Rewind' and listen all over again. This suggest relation to the magazine that rewind is related to music because the audience get given the use of rewinding music when listening to it also in relation to the magazine the term Rewind has been used because music has become so good from UK artists in the modern era that it is worth rewinding the music and listening to it again.

Target Audience for my music magazine

The target audience I have chosen for my music magazine are audiences that listen mainly to Rap and RnB songs. I have chosen this genre because this is the type of music I like to listen and I know that I will be comftable in establishing a front cover, contents page and double page spread for this genre.

The two magazines I researched are XXL and Vibe.

The colour scheme used for XXL magazine is mainly the colours red, White and black.
The colour schemes used for Vibe magazines mainly Red, White and Black, however for some artist vibe have changed the colour scheme around for example for Drake the colour scheme was Black, Yellow and White.

The price for XXL is £3.95 and the price for Vibe magazine is £3.50.

The articles in XXL mainly focus on the selected artists present and future and the magazine mainly asks the artists selected what they intend on doing in the future.
However Vive magazine mainly focuses its articles on the artist’s history and how they got to the position they are at now.

The marketing strategy that Vibe magazine uses is a subscription package where the customer can order magazine issues for 6 months on a discount deal; this is the same for Vibe magazine. Also the marketing strategies that both magazines use are that they give opportunities to audiences to win merchandise and tickets to concerts.

The online version to both magazines has more information inside it, it also gives links for social networking sites such as facebook and twitter.

Deconstructing Magazine covers

    • The models head is covering the mast head, and this theme relates to the other front covers for this magazine label.
    • The T-shirt colour of the artist matches the background colour.
    • The artists name is shown in a bigger font than the other writing on the cover this is because the magazine is mainly focusing on the model used on the front cover.
    • The colours of the teasers on the right hand side of the magazine are the same for the writing on the top of the magazine.
    • There are two buttons one is located on the top left and the other is located on the top right.
    • The target audience for this magazine are Rnb/ Hip Hop listeners.

Deconstructing Magazine covers

  • The head of the model (The game) is covering the text and this is shown in other different covers for XXL magazine showing that there is a trend.
  • The angle of gaze is straight at the audience.
  • Slang used, ‘sumfin’, this showing the stereotypical view of how listeners to this type of genre talk.

  • The artist name is written in bigger font than the other writing on the magazine cover.

  • This text colour relates to the colour of the masthead showing the relation in the colour scheme.

  • The Audience for this magazine is for listeners of rap and maybe the age group is 16-34.

Final Preliminary Task

Front cover:

Seeing my final front cover for my preliminary task, I chose to use the colour scheme of Blue, Grey and Black, I chose these colours because they are masculine and my magazine is aimed for mainly boys in the 6th form. I chose to take a picture of a model reading a book because that refers back to how the education has got tough. The title 'Advance' shows a step up from GCSE to A levels. I've used a button on my front cover to indicate prizes to be won because people at the age of 17-18 like to get prizes.

Contents:

For my contents I chose to use the background as the brick wall because I wanted to carry out the same theme. Also the title is in the same font and colour as the front cover. I've chosen to use put my contents page references in a spiral because I think this lay out will attract the reader.
